Do I Have to Follow Back on Twitter?

NO… N.O.

A client asked me this, she was worried about being rude but one of her new followers had an obscene account. She had been following every single new follower back.

I talk a lot about building a community. Check out your new followers before you follow back. Ask yourself these questions.

  1. How relevant to your community are they?
  2. Are you interested in what they have to say or in their business?
  3. Most importantly do you want to be associated with their name? You’re working on building your brand and people do look at who you follow.

On the flip side of this I also look at how many people they are following. If someone has 500 followers but are only following 20 well that is rude. You’re building a community not a kingdom.

You can ask yourself these same questions for Instagram.

How Many #Hashtags Should You Use?

Have you ever seen the share on Instagram or status on Facebook that has 20 hashtags?

You will find many differing opinions. One blog says 11 hashtags is the sweet spot another might say 3. Hootsuite recommends no more than 5 and I agree with Hootsuite.

One of the worst mistakes you can make is to use too many hashtags. You look inexperienced and spammy.  Ever see the person on Instagram that puts 20 hashtags and spaces in between each one? Don’t do that! It annoys your followers.

You may ask why? Well, using too many hashtags attracts the wrong crowd. Its kind of like hanging out behind the gym in social media. Instead of just using every hashtag that pops into your head give it a bit more thought. Think about your community. Who are you try to attract? Search the hashtag see who else is using it. Do you want to be associated with them or that?

Quick tips to hashtags-

  1. You should always use your company or brand name.
  2. What are you selling? #shirts #cookies #blankets
  3. Connect with others about a particular story or group. #sportsteam #scifi #NationalMargaritaDay   *One tip here. Do NOT cash in on someones misery to promote yourself. Very bad!
  4. Don’t use something so original no one will find or even understand what it means.
  5. No more than 5 hashtags.

Hashtags are actually pretty simple. Have fun with it and HAPPY #hashtagging!

Do Page “Likes” Bring ROI?

I’ve been asked many times – How do I get more followers or  page likes? In my opinion this is the wrong question.

Yes, it looks good at first glance. You check out a page and it has 1000 or even 10,000 likes.  However, high numbers doesn’t mean your business will grow or sales will skyrocket. Have you ever checked out these so-called followers or page likes. I have, if most of the followers are from India and you own a coffee shop in Poulsbo, Washington how will that help your business or ROI? I’ve worked with people that payed for likes or followers but it’s just for appearance. Why put your money there?

The real question should be – How Do I Get more Engagement? The most important factor is to build a community that’s relevant to you. It’s far better to have a small number of fans that are engaged. This is where you should spend the money or your time. Set aside 10  minutes a day and engage with your social media community.

How to Increase Your Instagram Followers (Seriously)

Over the years I’ve read a lot of blogs with people giving so-called tips. You read the article and at the end you say to yourself “well now what”. Not one single realistic tip. Sure you could hire someone to spend 2-3 hrs a day, which is actually what one person recommended. Or you could try to do that yourself but time isn’t something you have a lot of.

I’ve been helping other people grow for so long that I decided for 2016 its time to grow my own community too.

In 4 easy steps I’m going to tell you how I doubled my Instagram followers in two weeks. We’re not talking thousands but more realistic numbers. Purely organic!

  1. My first step was to set aside 10 minutes 5 days a week to spend on Instagram.
  2. I started searching #’s that I was interested in. Wow, I found really great people and pictures.
  3. I engaged and guess what? They started following me and liking my pictures back.
  4. When I ran low on ideas I looked at trending #’s.

That’s it! Look for future blogs about Instagram picture contests and give-aways.
