Should You Kill Your Competitors?

Sometimes our instincts are to kill fellow businesses. Stealing their ideas and clients or customers can be common practice. You read headlines like “LEARN WHAT YOU’RE UP AGAINST“. I recently read this line “Take other businesses ideas and make them your own”. One article went as far as saying “Don’t be tempted to engage with your competitors, not unless they engage with you first”. When I was in the corporate world part of what I did as a small business social media specialist was study the competition on social media. I made weekly reports and shared significant findings with VP’s in our monthly meeting. On occasion, fellow marketers would throw out ideas for marketing campaigns against the competition. Sometimes the comments for campaigns were downright cruel. I understand wanting to be the leader in the industry but it should be done with dignity.

Personally. I have a very different approach and it is very successful for me. As you may know, I’ve had several businesses. My first “Brick and Mortar” business was in an area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania called the Southside. We enjoyed working with the business community. We planned block parties and many other events together. We looked out for each other. My business partner and I had been held at gunpoint in an attempted robbery. During the scuffle, he grabbed me and held the gun to my temple but that’s a story for another day. The police grabbed the first black guy they saw completely ignoring our description. To top it off it was a neighboring business owner. We felt horrible. I had to walk by while he was in handcuffs and his face was smashed to the ground. The police repeatedly asked me if I was sure this isn’t the guy. Later when we talked he was incredibly understanding. This could have gone very differently if we had the unprincipled attitude so many business owners have. Going forward the businesses worked together to keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.

Seaside Town, Washington

Years later I had the opportunity to work with several business owners in a small seaside town in the state of Washington. The group of businesses that I worked with was, fabulous but it was shocking to me how cutthroat some of the other business owners were. They would go into each other’s stores to see what they were selling and then a week later start selling the same thing. There are plenty of original ideas out there. They were caddy and rude to each other. If it wasn’t for the chamber of commerce I honestly don’t think any group events would have happened. Those events came with drama. Businesses wouldn’t share information and from a marketing standpoint, it was a nightmare. I want everyone to succeed not work against each other. Especially when you’re in a tourist area you need to be able to rely on each other.

For small businesses to survive, I strongly believe working together is integral. Think of how many towns a big box store chain has come in and slowly put all the small businesses out of business one by one. If the small businesses worked together they may have a better chance of survival.

How Is Your Small Business Preparing for Black Friday?

You know Black Friday is coming. You’ve either ordered your inventory (and hoping it arrives on time) or you’re already unpacking it. You’re planning the window displays but what are you planning on social media? You might be planning a post or two the week of and maybe on Black Friday. Is that enough though?

Did you know shoppers are planning for Black Friday too? Some shoppers plan as early as October 1st. They are already searching Google for early deals. Your big box store competitors are ready and you need to be too. Below are 6 tips for Brick & Mortar and 4 tips for your online stores.

Here are 6 tips for Brick & Mortar stores

  1. Know where your customers are following you most and are most engaged. Focus on that platform. For some, it might be Facebook or others Instagram, maybe even Tiktoc. One or two platforms is best that way you don’t spread yourself too thin.
  2. You may have noticed the keyword here is PLANNING. Set your goal and start now. Don’t wait until the week of Black Friday.
  3. Get to know your customers. This will help you reach them.
  4. Quality content over quantity. Most platforms’ algorithms will sort posts with low resolution. blurry. or recycled content and make them less visible. Watch out also for borders or too much text over the image.
  5. Video is where it’s at. Vertical videos are best for most social media platforms. They don’t have to be long, 30 – 60 seconds at most. Be yourself, entertaining and fun. Don’t forget the music.
  6. Use Google My Business. If you’re unfamiliar, ask me how.

Here are 4 tips for Online stores or if you have both

  1. Let’s talk shipping. It’s expensive for your store no way around it but it’s also one of the biggest selling points to your customers. Most people are looking for either free or low-cost shipping. In fact, 90% of people are looking for free shipping. It might be something to factor into your operating expenses. It matters when they’re going to receive it too They want it in two days, not two weeks.
  2. This has been said a million times but make sure your site is mobile-ready. Mobile-ready, mobile-ready, mobile-ready! It’s a shock when a site isn’t and the fastest way to lose a sale.
  3. All of the above tips for Brick & Mortar.
  4. Make sure your social media pages connect to your website.

We recently taught a class at the Bainbridge Island Public Library. We learned just how important what we have to offer is to small business. Each of us received great questions after the class. We talked for over an hour after our presentation. WOW right??

For years we’ve been offering our services to small businesses but what we’ve learned is there’s a new trend, many small businesses actually want to learn how to do things for themselves. Sure, I have clients that never touch a computer and just want me to manage and post everything for them. They might check in once a month to see how things are going but they really just want to focus on their hands-on-business.

Those that want to learn find that most classes target experienced marketers and don’t actually focus on helping small businesses that are 1-10 employees. Truly small business! That’s what made our class such a success. Each of us received questions ranging from spamming laws to SEO and analytics.
